In geological terms, the Yaamba Pit is located in alluvial deposits of Quaternary age. These Holocene sediments associated with riverine deposits of the Fitzroy River, comprise gravel, sand, silt and clay.
The site area is within the Beserker Beds, which have been described as “a complex unit of volcanics and volcaniclastic sediments with considerable variation of rock types, including rhyolitic lavas, rhyodacitic, dacitic and andesite tuffs, basic lavas and indurated volcanic derived sediments”.
Sand and gravel are the principal extractions from the Yaamba Pit.
